Researching and Planning E4 and Brief

The owner of E4 is channel 4. Channel 4 also owns many other channels including Film 4, 4 Music and 4od. E4 has been running since 18th January 2001 becoming available to people for free view in 2008. They broadcast a wide range of popular programmes including American ports like The Big Bang Theory, How I Met Your Mother and Scrubs and British programmes like Skins, Misfits, The Inbetweeners and Hollyyoaks. I would say the primary target audience for E4 would be teenagers of all races between the ages of 16 to 21. I also know this because in a annual report they deliberately make there programmes around a specific area to encourage all races to watch there programmes e.g. My Big Fat Gypsy Wedding.
This is because the demographic of these ages are getting more suited to adult humor in there lives compared to the humor from when they were kids. Also the characters from these programmes are similar to the ages of the audience so the audience can almost relate to the programmes character. Also psychographically the audience can be classed as individuals as teenagers may want to watch the programmes by themselves due to the adult humor. The secondary primary audience would be working class adults from ages from 21 to 50. I think this is the secondary primary audience because many adults may watch funny programmes while at home or when they get home from work. Also when the younger audience discover a new programme they like they will usually tell there parents about it. The other channels apart of Channel 4 is Film 4 which could be targeting teenagers and adults because of the films age certificates. They also own 4music which could be targeted at the younger audience to keep track of what is the best music at the time.

An E sting is an ident to make people stay on the channel as more idents will be presented to them. These e stings can be made with a variety of ways e.g. claymation and cutout animation. Claymation is animation that is captured with photo's while using a clay model to move. A good example of claymation is the Wallace and Gromit series as the characters are made with clay and take years to make. Cutout animation is the process of using cloth and paper to create characters on a 2D surface. South Park popular series started off by using cutout animation however they switched to computer animation.

Genre - The genre of this E sting could be linked to the action genre as it is fast paced and there is a gun which is a prop that is very common in action. It would also be comedic towards the older audience because the character is of a old man which allows them to relate to each other.

Audience - The audience for this E sting would most likely be targeted at people males from ages 17-60. The guns and the violence would be more suited towards the older audience rather than children because they might not understand the dark humor of the E sting. Also the male audience will maybe take a more interest from the E sting because that is what most males like. Demographically the class of the audience could be working class because the enviorement of the E sting is mostley a working class location and couldn't really be linked to say medium class people. Pcychographically

Content - The content of this E sting contains a farmer shooting down ducks from the sky. He is then crushed by a E4 sign with wings.

I liked this E -sting because of the effects of the gun. I am still trying practicing animation and I would like to learn how to apply those effects. Also this animation looks like computer animation which I have not seen yet while taking this course.



Genre - The genre of this E sting is mostly comedy because the main protagonist is a famous one which people are supposed to know who he is because the protagonist is usually a evil one however with him in other bright clothes this is amusing to people. This is cleverly made because of the protagonist. With this it can be confusing on who the target audience is because the E sting is a hybrid genre.

Audience - The target audience for this E sting was mostly males and females from 17-60 because that is usually E4's main audience. This audience would appeal to this E sting because they will most likely know who the protagonist is. Also children wouldn't appeal to this as the first part of the E sting would maybe scared of the protagonist. The genre can also tell us the audience the E sting was mean't for. Demographically the audience would probably be people from aged 10 and up of all classes. Psychographically the audience could be individuals who are into old literature like the book Dracula.

Content - The E4 logo is in the center in a black background and a Dracula comes out of the darkness to bite the E4 logo. The blood he gets from it transforms him into a disco version of himself.

The reason why I liked this E sting was because of the humor of taking a well known stereotypically evil protagonist and changing him into a harmless person is amusing to me. Also I felt that the stop motion was used and shot well.



Genre - The genre of this is hard to tell as some children may find this distressing because of when the bear turns evil however some people may find this to be humoress. The genre of the E sting would mostly be seen as a comedy to the E4 audience which is usually teens and adults.

Audience - The audience that E4 would have targeted with this E sting would mostly be teenagers. This is because they may understand the humor more than a child would with this. However I think this would have been placed after the watershed to avoid the sensitive children from viewing the E sting. Demographically the audience is hard to be put into a specific class. However the most common audience would probably be for working class as thats what E4 audience mostly would consists of.

Content -  At first the little bear has a E4 logo on a stick. The big bear then takes the logo away from the little bear. The little bear then becomes made and proceeds to attack the big bear. The E4 logo goes flying before getting stuck in the ground

The reason why I like this E sting is because I found it funny. Also the stop motion aniamtion was done well with the bears and the E4 logo.



The Intention of making a Thaumatrope was to investigate the persitence of vision which is when the mind automatically can put things together when it see's to things that are mean't to connect in a way. With my Thuamatrope I felt like I could have maybe drawn it more accuratly however I think I did well for my first time making one.


For the lego stop motion task we went into detail on how to make 3D models have speech. We started by considering how humans speak with there lips and teeth and the formation of words. We then used sticky labels to make mouth for our models and used stop motion to make the speech for them.



 For the live action animation we were given a brief onto make the plot about a race. We could could manipulate this in any way we want. Our group decided to just make an old fashioned race by using to indiviuals going after something. We were also trying to make it comedic so people could enjoy it.


The type of animation I am going to use is claymation. This is becuase the models you make with clay can be manipulated creativly. Even famous films like Jason and the Argonaunts 1963 were so successful becuase of the claymation. However with other methods like Lego it is more difficult to control the limbs of the models without breaking them. At the start I had a struggle with what anaimtion I wanted to choose. Never the less I made a narrative and proceded to choose claymation because I felt it could be filmed most effectively with clay.
