Kurent
Narrative Structure
The narrative structure in this film is different to the usual classic Hollywood narrative because we are shown the protagonist however we are unsure if the film is the starting or ending or is somewhere in between. However during the film we are shown that the quest that the protagonist has to overcome is to stop the winter season and start the season spring in a forest to achieve equilibrium. During this time we are shown that the genre of the film is fantasy and mystery. When the main protagonist has ended winter in the area of the forest we are unsure of what he will do next which isn't like the normal classic Hollywood narrative structure as usually in films like in Avengers assemble when equilibrium is achieved by the heroes when the stop the alien invasion and then go about their normal life's.
Identification
There isn't that much identification however with the protagonist a close up is used to the show protagonist expressionless face which suggest that it isn't effected by the cold which gives us an insight on the protagonist and attaches us to it. Also there is an extreme close up of the protagonist hand reaching for the girl in a gentle manner which implies he is a gentle creature.
Sound
The sound used in the film was mostly non-diegetic as the music would not have been in the world of the film. However there was some diegetic sound as well like the gust of wind and the protagonist footsteps through the snow. The music is defiantly parallel because the music is sad which can be linked to the season winter as many people hate the cold. Another aspect of sound that is included in this film is asynchronous sound. This is when sound is added in the post production stage to create the world of the film. This is included when the protagonists rings his bells around his belt.
Mise en scene
The setting of the film is in a forest which suggests that the film will be remote and wild. Also the blizzard implies that the forest has wild things happening in it and as we are introduced to the main protagonist we discover that this is true. Also the blizzard may add to the wildness and naturalistic film. The protagonist’s body language is shown in the scene where he is dragging his feet through the snow. This suggests that the protagonist is tired or exhausted in some way. The props in the film were a pencil and some bells around the protagonist waist. The pencil in the film was used to create the first spring light. This was maybe used to symbolize that the protagonist is drawing what he wants to happen. The bells however maybe used to let people now that spring is coming as bells are used to communicate with someone or something.
Cinematography
In the first scene it shows a establishing shot which shows the audience the setting so they know where the film will take place. The next shot is a medium close up which is introduces us to the main protagonist and makes us know the emotions of the protagonist. After this we are shown a re-establishing shot which lets the audience that the protagonist is in the setting which was introduced. The next shot shows a long shot of the protagonist which shows the audience more about the protagonist. Then a over the shoulder shot is shown to make us feel like we are in the protagonists perspective. Furthermore we are then shown the protagonist in a mid-shot and the camera slightly pans to the left to draw attention to the pencil in his hand. During the aftermath of the pencil drawing a dark ring we are then shown a bird’s eye view shot to show the audience the massive scale of effect it has made. Then we are shown a extreme close up of the protagonists hand reaching for the humans hand. This is meant to draw the audience attention to his gentle way.
Editing and the Continuity System
Most of the shots that are used in this film is the basic cut however we are also shown other transitions like the fades and the dissolve. Fades are often used to indicate the passing of time. This is used after the re-establishing shot has taken place to let the audience know that the protagonist has been walking for some time. There is also a dissolve when after the montage of the animals. A dissolve is meant to mark a memory. Most of the continuity system is correct however in one shot there was no match on action to see which hand is reaching out for the girl. When we see him again we see he has his right hand out which can confuse the audience and be put off the film.
Suspense
In this film there isn’t much suspense created as the genre goes against suspense. However when the pencil is used the editing pace is increased. This makes the audience panicky and excited.

Cool Unicorn Bruv
Narrative Structure
The narrative structure in this film is similar to the classic Hollywood narrative because it has a main protagonist leading his normal life trying to sell his bike to a customer. He then has to overcome a quest by trying to compete his bike against the man with his unicorn. However in the end equilibrium or closure isn't achieved as he still needs to sell his bike which separates the film from the classic Hollywood narrative. Symbolically this ending is seen as a funeral because the main protagonist has to find a new customer to buy his bike. However if it ended like a wedding he would have sold his bike to the customer instead of losing him.
Identification
Identification is when the audience is involved with the characters in the narrative. There are techniques that allow the audience to become attached to the characters. In this film some of the techniques are used, one of these is the close up. The close up allows us to enter the characters emotions and experience them with the character. This is used in the second shot of the film when he is trying to make a sale. Another technique of this is the reaction shot. This is when something in the scene happens and we then see how another character reacts to the event emotionally. This is used when the customer is interested with the unicorn and the man with the unicorn is describing the unicorn’s features. This lets us know that the main protagonist is frustrated with the man with the unicorn.
Sound
The sound in this film was mostly diegetic sound. Diegetic sound is sound in the world of the film where the source is evident on screen. In this film this would be the bike bell, the cars driving past and the unicorn’s hoofs. Also there is ambient sound in this film which is shown in the background which is citizens going about their daily business and car engines. This adds realism to the film and also is important in the continuity system. Another feature of sound that is used in the film is synchronous sound, this is when the it seems like the sound is or seems to be coming from a action on screen with characters or objects. For example the dialogue in the film seems to be synchronous as we see the characters talking.
Mise-en-scene
The setting in which the narrative is set is a town or city centre which usually suggests that some sort of business happening as this is where most things are bought. The setting also makes the film more realistic as it is a place where anyone can go at any time. The costumes that the characters wear are mostly the trackies and hoodies and trainers, which suggests that the characters are meant to be an image of the chav stereotype. However they stray from this as they are portrayed as businessmen and hagglers. The body language that is used is a confident stance which suggests that the characters have sold many things before. However when the man with the unicorn is describing the unicorns features, the main protagonist body language changes to a twitchy and nervous stance which connotes that he knows the unicorn is better than his bike however he still persists to make the sale. The only prop of the film was the bike. This was maybe used to get across that the characters were part of the chav stereotype because many people see chavs with bmxs and bikes.
Cinematography
The first shot is a establishing shot this is used to introduce the main protagonist and the customer, it also introduces the setting in which the story will take place. The next shot shows a close up of the main protagonists face as it invites us into his personal space which allows us to experience his emotions and become attached to him. The next shot is a re-establishing shot which shows the audience that everything is still in the right place and that the continuity system is still being enforced. After the main protagonist and the customer have discussed the features of the bike the man with the unicorn enters the scene at a low angle shot. This can suggest that the man with the unicorn is overpowering the customer and forcing him to ask about the unicorn. Another aspect of cinematography that is used is when the man and his unicorn is walking down the street the camera pans back to the main protagonist. This emphasizes that the main protagonist frustration at how the man stole his customer away.
Editing and the Continuity system
Most of the shots in this film are cuts. The cut is used to make the film run smoothly and make the audience forget about the editing The continuity system in the film is met really well. One way in which this is enforced is the shot just before the man with the unicorn walks in the scene the main protagonist and the customer look of-screen just before the cut is made to let the audience know that a new character is about to be introduced. This is known as a match-on-action.
Suspense
There isn’t much suspense in this film as it would be unnecessary to do as the narrative doesn't have much suspense in it.
