Music Video: Research and Planning
Step 1
Arctic Monkeys: Do I Wanna Know
Step 2
When analysing the track we have to take into account some different things.
Step 3
Existing Music videos
The Arctic Monkeys have been around since 2002 when the band formed. There style has changed slightly through the years from starting of as a indie punk band. However as they have been together through the years they have found a style that attracts the mainstream which has nominated them for awards and won them. Including nomination for three grammys and has won seven Brit awards which has included Best British Act.
Clothing
The clothing of the Arctic Monkeys haven't really changed that much. There style is usually just with a black t shirts with a stereotypical punk haircut. Some artists dress in a way to show who they are as a person and with the band this is so.

Make up
Make up is not really a big part of the Arctic Monkeys style. However they do use some for to look good in there music videos and during interviews. With other artists like Marilyn Manson make up is a big part of his style however with some other artists its just to make them seem appealing to their audience.
The Tone of Existing Music Videos
Videos differ from time to time. The song that I am doing for the music video for is Do I Wanna Know and the music video is a very dark and depressive atmosphere. However when they were just starting out with the song I Bet you Look Good on The Dancefloor the music video was a lot more up tempo which gave it sort of a dancy vibe.
This video is an animation that is in black and white. The lyrics compliment this by singing about a break up.

However with this music video it is just a performance by the band rather than a smooth animation trying to convey a message.
Locations of Previous Music videos
The locations that the Arctic Monkeys mostly differ from time to time. However in most videos they are usually never without there instruments and on a stage which tells us that there music is what they want to do and is their passion. The band is signed with an independent record label based in London and they have wings in multi national countrys. This may be the reason that the band have many different types of locations for their music videos.

Concepts and Narratives
The concepts and narratives of the music videos in my opinion are mostly about relationships and how people deal with them. The music videos explains how some people react to them. This is a popular theme in popular songs which many people can relate to.
In this video Snap Out Of It. It could be said that the result of this women crying could be over a break up.
This music video Why'd You Only Call Me When Your High? is about a guy wanting to see a girl very late at night.
Arctic Monkeys: Do I Wanna Know
Step 2
When analysing the track we have to take into account some different things.
- Meaning/Concept/content - Overall I feel that this song is about a break up and how the male is wondering whether see is sad about the break up as well.
- Imagery - The imagery shown in the song is a rather depressive vibe. It gives of a rather dark and gloomy atmosphere. The music video is mostly of lines that shift into other things. However the lines often shift when the guitar is playing. This is most likely to simulate the guitar strings and the voices included in the song.
- Narrative - The narrative seems to be of a break up between a guy and a girl. The guy wants to get back together but he is not sure whether the girl has moved on. The title suggests whether he wants to know whether she has moved on and is with someone else.
- Genre/Style - The genre of the song is most likely indie rock. This is basically making and producing the music by yourself which can usually be received as having a low production budget
- Pace - The pace of the song is rather slow throughout the song.
- Duration - The duration of the video is 4:25. I will have to cut this down to meet the guidelines set out. The guideline of the music video we will create is that it has to be from 3:4 minutes long.

Styles,Conventions and Techniques
There are many different kinds of music videos. Many have different formats and don't focus on the same areas. In this essay I will research some of the styles and conventions that some music videos adopt.
Usually in a live concert music video you will have a live audience wanting to listen to the band where ever the location is.
Also in these music videos their will always footage of the artists playing
their instruments to promote their own talent.
Narrative and Interpretive
In music videos there usually is a narrative to be seen in a music video. Most narratives are easy to follow however in some music videos the narrative is usually interpretive which means there is a underlining narrative. They will usually have a beginning and an end.
The narrative in this music video clearly had a beginning and end however some others are harder to see than others. Clearly there is also a three act structure taking place in the video.
Firstly the guy meets the girl at a party also establishing the band's style which is a punk rock style evident with e.g. skinny jeans and the dresses.
The guy and the girl get into a fight and break up. The guy then is depressed and becomes a nuisance.
The guy then leaves his mum and the girl and drives away.
With narrative and interpretative music videos the audience can become more involved in the video. It allows the audience to understand the lyrics a lot more.
Surrealist/Absurdist
These types of music videos almost don't make any sense to the comparison to the lyrics however the point of these music video's is to convey a message and are meant to be observed rather than listened to.
For example in the music video Loser by Beck the lyrics doesn't conform to the music video. Throughout the music video you see a coffin moving about the place. Not once in the music video is the coffin mentioned in the music video. It is up to the audience to understand it in their own way.
Impressionist
Impressionist music videos is the more artistic style of music videos. The way the are made if different from the way surreal/absurdist music videos are made. Impressionism was an actual movement by artists in the 19th century that aimed to explore how other people viewed the world. Artists then made paintings to express this. There are many music videos that have this similar vibe to them. For example the song The Kill by 30 Seconds to Mars is impressionist in the sense that there is a lot of symbolism in the imagery that is included in it. It uses a lot of emotional lyrics that can match the same as what is happening in the
Here the performance is very dramatic trying to get the lyrics across to the viewer.
The people in this scene and the light may seem weird to the viewer however the director of the music video was obviously trying to get across something. This is evident in a lot of impressionist music video.
Intertexual : Synergy/Allusion/Pastiche/Parody and Homage
Intertextual - This is the term when another text is presented in another text. Usually this is for a artistic purpose or a homage however it can be used for other purposes. Furthermore this can just be mentioning some other text which applys to.
Synergy - Synergy is the often a term used in the media to promote something while promoting other products. However in the context of music videos this is usually refering to other products or texts. One example of synergy marketing in music videos could be using a music video that is part of a soundtrack is often synergistic marketing as the music video will often have clips and references to the film. An example of this could be the Demi Lovato cover music video of Let It Go.
In this music video there is clips of the movie Frozen which is referencing this for promotion.
This is synergy as the combination of the two products support each other by reaching more people.
Allude - Alude in music videos is rather similar to synergy however it isn't shown clearly it is indirectly hinted at. For example in the music video Love Story by Taylor Swift it compares taylor swift and the boy to Romeo and Juliet the play written by Shakespere.
Firstly Taylor and the boy is at a modern college then when they meet they are compared to shakespere's Romeo and Juliet.
Pastiche - is when another artist imitates another artists style. This is a little similar to paying homage however this is rather a light hearted compliment of the artist.
This is a cover of one of Michael Jacksons songs. During the music video the band pull off an iconic dance move made by Michaek Jackson while adding their own music twist with the rock included.
Homage - Homage is when an artist pays there respect to a specific text or anything that is part of another text. There are many artists that have inspirations and they like to include them in their music videos. Iggy Azalea made a music video called Fancy which includes key scenes and clothing from a movie called Clueless.
Animation
Animation music videos are videos that are just made with animation. This can be any animation from computer animation to stop motion. These in my opinion are very unique from the other music videos that are out there today.
Lip-Synch -miming and playback
Lip synching music videos can be very common in the pop genre as they are perfoming during the music video. Lip synching is also used to show how there is sometimes narrative within the lyrics so through the music video the lip synching progresses the narrative. There can also be clever film effects shown through the music vieos like slow motion.
Editing
Editing in music videos can differ greatly from eachother. Many Music videos are edited in many intresting ways as they are not all the same. The editing can challenge the usual continuity rules and break them to create intresting effects. With MTV they select multiple music videos for many awards and one of these is editing. One of the winners was the music video Seven Nation Army by The White Stripes which had a very intresting concept with there editing.
This is one of my favourite music videos as the editing looks clever when there is a scene within in a scene and so on. This video won the MTV Music Award for Best Editing
Cutting To The Beat
Cutting to the beat essentially means that when your edit cuts to the beat of the music the audience pick up that there is a rhythm within the piece you are making. An example of this could be Sexy and I know It by LMFAO.
At the part when he gets just before the chorus there is a cut everytime he says show it. This is cutting to the beat which establishes a rhythm.
Post-Production Effects
In music videos visual effects are very popular when the video has a large budget and the artist is well known. They are mostly put in music videos to appeal to the audience when they are cutting edge proffesional effects. Many filmakers are also intrested by these effects which can draw them into watching it.
In this shot it is mostly CGI effects. In pop you will usually get expensive effects however if this was an unknown band it would be very unlikly that they would have these types of effects.
Split Screen
Split screen is a post production effect that is used in some videos. You don't see them much in music videos however some hits have included the effects. For example Billie Jean by Michael Jackson includes this effect during the video.
Camera Movements
In music videos camera movement can be importaunt if you want to keep your audience intrested and excited. There are many camera movements in music videos e.g. Crabing, Tracking and tilts. They are almost used in most music videos.
Camera Angles
By using a variety of camera shots and angles music videos use these to set a tone of a music videos. It can also show of the mise-en-scene in the music video.
Mise-en-scene
Mise en scene is arguably the most importaunt aspect as it is the aspect that will determine the mood of the music video. This is everything in the scene including props, lighting and setting. Most music videos take this into account as it can also be a crucial aspect when trying to make a music video for a particular type of music (genre).
Using props like this create a glamorous and glossy video as it uses product placement to show high value jewelry.
The setting is shown to show how she is the centre of the stage and has the most screen time and talent.
In- concert and "as live" footage
This format is when the music video is taking part in a live show for their fans or a group of people. Most rock and metal music videos use this format for their music videos. With these genres of music it is common to go see them at a concert or a festival so music videos use this as it is a norm in these genres to get them to do a performance in music video. For example Teenagers by My Chemical Romance features them on a live stage performing for teenagers.
Usually in a live concert music video you will have a live audience wanting to listen to the band where ever the location is.
Also in these music videos their will always footage of the artists playing
their instruments to promote their own talent.

Some people really appreciate music videos like these. Watch Mojo a popular YouTube channel considers this music video as one of the most decade defining songs in the 1990s.

The Purpose of Music Videos
Intro
The arrival of the music video could be said to be when queen released their song called Bohemian Rhapsody in 1975 the same year in which Jaws was released. This was a ground breaking video and set the template of the modern music video that people should use. Music video would then be in very high demand as there were not many outlets that fans could consume to see there favourite artist.
This essay will outline the overall purpose of the music video. I will explore questions on who,why and where people watch music videos.
Promotion of Artists
Promotion is a big part of why music videos are made. Promotion is things that encourage and support the buying of a song. When a music video is made it is thought out very carefully as the video is a reflection of the band or artist. Usually through a music video the artist will be perceived in the way they want to be perceived. This will show the world how they are through the music video.
In this music video promotion is shown through the bands attitude to money and how they are anti establishment. Just like any other music video the artist would choose to come across this way to target a specific audience however mostly it's just to show how they are.
As well as the artists in video's the song is also promoted in a music video. When music video's weren't made there was a limited outlet artists could promote there own songs by either a performance or a CD.
Sometimes music video's also promote the creator of the video as well as the song. For example some film directors have started out making films and going across into film. David Fincher (The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) directed Madonna's music video Bad Girl. When a famous director or producer takes part in the music video the production value increases and so forth the song is promoted as fans will know its good through the name.
Producer Strategies
Producer strategies are ways in which the producer can promote their artists. If we look at mainstream artists they are mostly found on the most popular of mediums e.g. YouTube and MTV.

Producers will come up with different ways to promote their own products through a variety of ways. No artist is the same so artists are promoted in many ways. With YouTube many producers will use this as it is a free medium they can use. Also most mainstream artist are shown through the music tab now so artist are more likely to be shown when they have a lot of views.
One of the reasons music videos exist is because of income. When Record labels and artists makes music usually they will recieve royalties or a payment for the use of their product. When they also make a music video this happens again for the amount of people who watch the video. This is why the most known artists do so well. If an unknown artist was to make a music video it has a very low chance of being seen because people in the media industry don't like to take risks. If a radio station like Kiss Fm was to stray away from the usual pop music and change it to rock music. It would be very hard to predict the outcome of the change.
This puts off people from discovering new artists because their is a risk of the royalties not being as high. Also this is why mainstream artists dominate the charts as people know a style of music works in different areas of the media.
Extensions of Media Outlets
With the coming of modern day technology there are many media platforms and outlets for music to be broadcasted to people. Some of these platforms are Radio, TV, Internet and Cds. On these platforms there are outlets which include Kiss FM, Scuzz, Soundcloud and Cd stores such as HMV. These outlets have there advantages and disadvantages for the up and coming artists. A clear disadvatage would be with the amount of outlets that are on offer the saturation of new talent increases dramatically. For example with Youtube 300 hours of content is being uploaded to youtube every mintute. With more content it means that artists can have there going literally un notices due to the volume of content. However due to this it can be an advantage as artists and record labels are forced to be more creative to get noticed which means you would be getting more promotion for a music video any way if its creative. E.g. Coldplay has a creative stop motion music video that has 9 million views on youtube.
Synergy
Synergy marketing is promotion and profit of a music video through licensing deals. This original idea was founded by Disney when Walt Disney gave other companys the rights to show Mickey Mouse on different products. This idea of synergy is widely used today and must be taken into account if you want to use other peoples work in a product. An example of synergistic marketing through a music video could be Nickelback Hero. This music video was also included and marketed in the Spiderman film. This allows the music video to combine the popularity of the movie to therefore promote it.
Conclusion
The reason why I think music videos are so popular is because in my opinion music plays a huge part in the our lives that influences all of us in different ways and plays a huge part in our culture. People will want to consume it as much as possible therefore there is a constant need for music videos. I feel that music video will sustain itself in the media because it is always pushing the boundarys and innovative music videos are constantly evolving. Overall I feel that music video popularity will continue to grow for a very long time.

Another way in which some producers promote their artists is through their own websites. Some independent and mainstream bands use websites for their fans to promote their own songs. Websites show a lot of information about the band or artist which can sometimes include the actual songs they produce.
However some unknown artists have to promote their own songs on their own. This is why the new media outlets have become so popular as it is free promotion. For example when Justin Bieber was young his videos were posted onto Youtube this was free. He was then discovered and has become known world wide. However the fact that it is free is can mean that sometimes unknown artists won't have the same budget as an established artist who is well known.

Single Camera Production Diary
Pre-production
We have started to our project by splitting up the script
into three parts. Each part will be taken on by an individual to spread the
work load equally. We each direct, produce and edit our own parts to show our
skills. We also helped with each other’s parts however were graded overall on
our parts of the single camera production. At first we had to plan the project
by making storyboards. These are used to give us a blue print of how the
production will go. We were each in charge of each other’s parts so we decided
to do our own storyboards. During this time we made up our minds on what
characters we were going to be. My character was Dan, Mark was Michael and
James was James. This was what we were doing for the most part from 5th
February till 12th February. During this time I also had to complete other
pre-production work like the production schedule. I tried to make the schedule
in the best possible way I could by estimating the time in which we might be
done by the deadline. We also had to get permission from the talent to make
sure we can film. There were many other pieces of paperwork including the risk
assessment, prop list and budget list. We mostly divided this out between our
group which included James and Mark as well as me.
Production
For the production side of the project we decided to do our
scenes in order to make sure we wouldn't become confused. However during the
production we revered back to our production schedule a lot which helped us
keep focus. The filming started on the 12th February .The group lives not far
from each other so it was great that we could reach locations that were close
to us. The equipment we had to hire consisted of a DSLR camera, tripod, mic and
neutral density filter. In our group we weren't very experienced with the equipment
so it took us some time to get used to it. During production we had changed
some of the locations to the ones we had planned to film at because we thought
that it was easier to focus on locations that we could use that were near
college. There were also other problems like the weather. As it was during the
end of winter it went dark rather quickly which led to some lighting inequalities.
Overall though we felt we did rather well with the production. We got the
finished project on the deadline.
Post Production
The post production of the project had its issue's as well.
Near the deadline it was a little stressful for me as I had accidently not
followed the script correctly as I was trying to show of my editing by re
arranging the shots however I quickly realised the narrative didn't flow quite
right. The editing still went well regardless. In my opinion this was the best
part of the project for our group. We had left the editing till the end of the
project which did cause some issues. It led to a rush at the end which should
be avoided. The title of the film was also changed, it was originally called
scheme. We then came to the conclusion that we would call it Badvice. We also made a good title sequence with the program Adobe After Effects. This was a good experience as I had not used Adobe After Effects before so I got to observe the program.

Preparing Editing Material
When preparing material for editing we must know what Mac computer we were on. This is because with the mac protects this data from any corruption people might accidentally do. When we make a project we choose a mac an log on with specific username and password. From this screenshot the username is media c which is part of the other mac computers however your data is protected as this is an individual user that restricts the files from being on any other username e.g. Media A, Media B, Media D, Media E and Media F on the different Macs.
When we want to edit some material for an assignment we must put in an SD card into the Mac to transfer the data into the Mac by placing it into one of your folders. This is important because the footage must come from the Mac itself rather than the SD card as you will find that editing from the SD card will leave you with problems. To do this we must first make a folder in the movie document on the Mac. This ideally would be the name of your project or something distinctive so you can remember it. You would then need to go into the file in which your footage is in and transfer the folder called Private into the folder you created. Once this is done you need to then rename this folder to the date you created the footage.
To do this you double click on the current file name and the text should be highlighted for you to edit the name. Once this is done the you should be able to see the footage. Usually when this process is done right the footage will turn into a folder with your the footage inside with an item called AVCHD, this is your footage you want to import into a project on Adobe Premier Pro but first you have to make the project.

First you must select new project which then gives you the option to edit the audio and video type however I just left it how it was. Then you must give your project a name and also select the right format and frame rate for it to present itself in the way you want it to be presented. For my project I had to select the AVCHD 1080p at 25 frames as the camera I filmed in was a 1080p video camera.
Furthermore the program will then open for you to start editing. Before you start editing you will need to import your footage into the program for you to edit this. First you must select the option file in the top left hand corner then go to import to bring up the menu were you can locate your footage. When this is done some bins will appear and inside them will be your footage.
Organizing your footage into separate bins can make it much more easier for you to locate footage. Also when you do this you must have all the files on the Mac PC rather than on your SD card otherwise your project will not include the files in your project, this is because when you import your footage into premier pro the bins are only images of the file which are actually pathways to the files that are on the mac to Premier Pro. If this isn't understood the files in your project might get a question mark on which means Premier Pro can't find your files.
